In a nutshell, Feynman’s astonishing proposition is that nature actually does try all paths. But nearly all of them cancel out with their neighboring paths, through a quantum analog of destructive interference — except for those very close to the classical path where the action is minimized (or more precisely, made stationary). There the quantum interference becomes constructive, rendering those paths exceedingly more likely to be observed. This, in Feynman’s account, is why nature obeys minimum principles. The key is that we live in the macroscopic world of everyday experience, where the actions are enormous compared to Planck’s constant. In that classical limit, quantum destructive interference becomes extremely strong and obliterates nearly everything that could otherwise happen.

Baby, you were the greatest. You were so smart, and ladylike, and gentle..yet somehow 100% in charge of the cat hierarchy of our home. When that truck rolled you a few years back I felt sorry for the truck! All you lost was that notch in your ear, but I'm sure he had to have his transmission and muffler replaced.

I studied your conflict resolution techniques carefully..the other cats when faced with trouble would either (Jackie Tan) run for the hills, or (Miles) roll over and show a vista of white belly. But YOU walked directly towards the trouble. Deal with it NOW.

I can only hope you had as happy and comfortable a life with us as we did with you, and if and when you decide to come back (or was this your final enlightened incarnation?), you'll get in touch.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you. I loved you more than all the hugs and ear scratchings and tuna treats could ever convey.
